Local History
Sykia has a long history and is regarded as one of the oldest villages in the Halkidiki region.
Koukos
The plateau at the summit of Koukos Hill was once surrounded by a fortified settlement, where an important prehistoric community flourished. Archaeological excavations show that the area has been inhabited since the 11th century BC, likely due to the rich copper sources exploited during the Middle Bronze Age. Further evidence of the region’s long history is found in a prehistoric burial mound discovered in Kriaritsi, a few kilometers south of Sykia.
Kriaritsi
In the Kriaritsi area of Sykia, a significant prehistoric burial mound was uncovered, dating from the late Middle to the Late Early Bronze Age (approximately 2300–1900 BC). This artificial mound contained around 30 circular graves, each holding vessels with the cremated remains of the deceased. The discovery is unique in the region of Macedonia and offers valuable insight into Bronze Age burial practices and mound construction techniques.
